With this being Memorial Day weekend and garden planting time, it gets me thinking…..do you garden?

There’s something sacred about stepping out onto your porch and seeing life blooming in pots. In a world that often feels too loud and too fast, container gardening is my relaxation—a quiet, beautiful “yes” to peace, beauty, and purpose. And friend, you don’t need sprawling acres to grow something lovely. A few clay pots and a willing heart are more than enough. (To be truthful I don’t even have a green thumb!)

Why Container Gardening?

For many of us—especially those rebuilding, healing, or starting over—container gardening is the simplest way to reconnect with nature. Whether you’re in a tiny apartment or a little corner lot like me, porch gardening offers:

  • Accessibility – No need for a shovel or a tiller. Just some pots, soil, and sunlight.
  • Manageability – When life is busy or overwhelming, a few containers are easier to tend than a full-blown garden. Even if it is just one!
  • Flexibility – Move them around to catch the sun, change the view, or protect from storms.
  • Beauty and Therapy – There’s a kind of therapy that happens when your hands are in the dirt and your eyes are fixed on blooming things. It can be the best kind of therapy sometimes.

Choosing Peaceful Plants

For a peaceful porch garden, go for a mix of color, fragrance, and greenery. Some of my favorites include:

  • Lavender – Calming scent, beautiful blooms.
  • Chamomile – Healing and perfect for tea.
  • Mint or basil – Easy to grow and useful in the kitchen.
  • Geraniums or marigolds – Cheerful, hardy, and bright.
  • Lettuce and spinach Help feed body and soul.
  • Tomatoes – Bright color and taste.

Remember: even a single flowerpot can carry hope. Start small if you need to. One container, one plant, one peaceful moment at a time.

The Miracle of It All

Sometimes, when life feels too heavy, I sit beside my containers, refreshment in hand, and watch the leaves flutter. It reminds me that we’re allowed to grow slowly. That beauty can be found in small, unexpected places. That healing isn’t always bold or loud—it often whispers in the rustle of thyme, the fragrance of rosemary or the sweet taste of lettuce.

You don’t need to have it all together to plant a seed. You just need to begin.

A Few Tips for Your Porch Garden

  1. Use quality potting mix – Your plants will thank you.
  2. Water regularly – Especially during hot summer days.
  3. Fertilize lightly – Even miracles need nourishment.
  4. Choose the right-sized containers – Bigger roots need bigger homes.
  5. Group plants for visual impact and easier care.

May your porch bloom with joy, and your heart bloom with peace.
